The Attractions of La Romana

The city is an all encompassing holiday package. The beaches at Dominicus-Bayahibe are the first to receive the European Blue Flag certification in the whole of the Caribbean region. The certification is for the water quality, safety services, environmental management and protection. Though most of the hotels are privately owned, the law of the land declares the first 60 meters of a beach as public property. As said earlier the place is a huge vacation destination, the other places of interest are Saona Island, Isla Catalina, Bayahibe town, the fun cave of Hato Mayor, the cave of wonders or the Cueva de las Maravillas and the National Park spread over miles of green country.

Saona Island is a small island which is approachable through the sea route. The lonely powder sand beaches, the fishermen village of Mano Juan, scuba diving and fishing are a few attractions. You can watch all the big fish, sharks and whales in the clear waters around the island.

Isla Catalina is another small island and has been declared a wildlife reserve. One can enjoy snorkeling in the breath taking coral reefs in the island.

The Cueva Fun Fun is a four mile long cave, the longest in the Caribbean. It is a must visit spot in La Ramona. The cave art, the long winding corridors and the heavenly gurgling of the underground rivers add to the charm of the exotic place. Another cave the Cueva de las Maravillas is reached by road. Here you can see the stalagmites and stalactites like giant fingers of an aged and a huge collection of rupestrian paintings.
