Independence of Cuba
The slave rebellion of another Caribbean nation, Haiti did not foment any trouble but the seeds of discontent were sown. Cuba had been through a bitter struggle, called the Ten Year war in the late 1800. The Spanish imposed various restrictions and hundreds of thousands of Cubans perished primarily because of hunger and disease. The blowing up of a US ship was the nail on the coffin of Spanish occupation. The nation was declared an independent nation on 20 May 1902.
