History of Havana
The history of Havana began with the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. The formal birth of the city dates back to August 25, 1515, though not in the place where the city today stands. The Havana of today is the Careening Bay of 1519, where the city was relocated. As per popular legend the name Havana is the offshoot of Habana, probably the daughter of Habaguanex, an Indian Chief of the area. The city served as a launch pad for the conquests in Mexico and South America.
