History of Kingston
The city of Kingston was the result of destruction of the city of Port Royal by an earthquake during 1693. The refugees settled in tented camps in the area which is now the Downtown Kingston. The city of Kingston took formal shape only after Port Royal was further devastated by fire in 1703. The city began to grow both in physical size and economically. Just a decade later it became the largest city of Jamaica and the center of trade through its port. The city witnessed earthquakes, fires, hurricanes and attacks of the Italian pirates but it would come back like a phoenix from the ashes. The later part of the 1800s the city was made the capital of Jamaica.
